Forest Fire Lookouts
Preserving lookouts and their legacy
This site is for two Fire Lookout areas in California - Bald Mountain (NE of Mammoth Lakes) and numerous sites in Southern California. Additionally, this site hosts a dedicated Volunteer Log In section for certified lookouts at Bald Mountain.
Bald Mountain Lookout

Bald Mountain is the only standing and operating lookout facility on the Inyo National Forest. It was built in 1963 and was taken out of full-time service in the 1980's. In 2024, the Forest Fire Lookout Association partnered with the Mono Lake Ranger District of the Inyo National Forest to put her back into service with trained volunteers.
Southern California Lookouts

The Forest Fire Lookout Association (FFLA) is made up of over 1,300 volunteers across the country, who strive to preserve fire lookouts and their legacy. FFLA is separated into 33 Chapters. The California-South Chapter spans from the U.S. – Mexico border to Monterey. There are 29 standing towers in its jurisdiction.
